Legend tells of the children of the goddess Danann
as the most engaging folk to make Ireland their home. So strong was
their influence that after a thousand or more years of fusion with
previous settlers, they were still known by their ancient tribal
name, the Tútha dé Danann.
With them they brought four great, magical possessions. Firstly,
the Stone of Destiny, would cry out when the lawful king touched it
and which to this day stands on the Hill of Tara, seat of the high
kings of Ireland.
Secondly, the flashing spear of their warrior god Lugh which, once
hurled, brought inevitable victory to his soldiers.
Thirdly, the Sword of Nuada, from which nobody
could hide or flee, would seek out all enemies and destroy
them.
Finally, the cauldron of their all-powerful god,
the Daghda, not only satisfied his insatiable desire for porridge,
but also fed to bursting all who ate from it! |
